National Dog Day: Honouring the Dogs Who Serve

26 August 2026

On National Dog Day, the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) pauses to recognise not only the dogs who share our homes, but the extraordinary dogs who have served beside Australians in times of war, conflict and peace.

For generations, dogs have worked alongside military personnel in roles that demand remarkable courage, intelligence and trust.

Military working dogs have helped detect explosives and danger, protect personnel, locate people and provide vital support to their handlers. Beyond the battlefield, working dogs continue to serve our communities through policing, search and rescue, assistance and support roles.

A bond built on trust

The relationship between a working dog and their handler is unlike an ordinary working partnership.

These dogs train, work and sometimes face danger alongside the people who depend upon them. Their loyalty is unwavering, their senses extraordinary and their contribution can be lifesaving.

For many handlers and veterans, that bond also continues long after active service has ended.

Remembering their service

AWAMO believes the contribution of animals in war and service deserves lasting recognition.

Through memorials, education, commemorative events and community initiatives, we work to ensure the stories of animals who served alongside Australians are remembered by future generations.

National Dog Day provides another opportunity to recognise those remarkable animals.

Today we honour the dogs who served before us, those who continue to serve today, and the special bond between people and dogs everywhere.

Honouring the loyalty. Celebrating the bond. Remembering their service.

Lest We Forget.

Help us keep their stories alive

AWAMO’s work is made possible through the generosity of people who believe the service and sacrifice of animals deserves to be remembered.
