Volunteer with AWAMO

Honouring Service.
Remembering Sacrifice.

At the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO), we honour the courage, loyalty, and sacrifice of animals who have served alongside our defence forces.

Behind every memorial, ceremony, and educational program is a team of passionate volunteers who make it all possible.

Volunteering with AWAMO means becoming part of a national movement that preserves the legacy of war animals — from horses and donkeys to dogs, pigeons, and beyond.

Ensuring their service is never forgotten.

Ways to Get Involved

There are many ways to support AWAMO’s mission as a volunteer:

Local RSL Engagement:

Approach your local RSL to request recognition of 24 February each year as War and Service Animal Day, and ask to lay a purple poppy wreath on that day.

International Memorial Care:

Help maintain war animal memorials overseas. Many sites, such as Pozieres in France and along the Kokoda Trail, rely on volunteers to clean the area or polish bronze plaques. Even brief visits to these locations to inspect and tidy the memorials are greatly appreciated.

Pet Blanket Making:

Sew blankets for companion animals of homeless veterans. AWAMO delivers these blankets directly to those in need, providing comfort to both veterans and their pets.

Purple Poppy Making:

Craft purple poppies to honour the coats of service animals. Detailed directions are provided in our guide.

Fundraising:

Assist in raising funds at local events, in your shop, or within your community. AWAMO provides a donation tin decal and resources to help you get started.

Community Outreach:

Represent AWAMO at schools, community groups, and veteran organisations.
