In Loving Memory of Aslan: A Life of Courage, Loyalty and Service

In Loving Memory of Aslan: A Life of Courage, Loyalty and Service

The Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) joins the Defence community in mourning the passing of Aslan, a distinguished retired Combat Assault Dog whose remarkable life embodied courage, loyalty and unwavering service.

Aslan passed away peacefully, surrounded by those who loved him, following a period of illness. His loss is deeply felt by his family, former handlers, friends and the many people whose lives he touched.

Today, we honour not only his extraordinary military career, but also the lasting legacy he leaves behind.

Six Years of Dedicated Military Service

Born in the Netherlands, Aslan was recruited by the Australian Defence Force and went on to serve for six years as a Combat Assault Dog with the 2nd Commando Regiment, Special Operations Command Australia.

His distinguished career included supporting Australian military training teams and coalition forces in the United States, along with three years supporting the Tactical Assault Group.

Working alongside Australia’s highly trained Defence personnel, Aslan demonstrated the courage, discipline and loyalty that make Military Working Dogs such invaluable members of our armed forces.

These remarkable animals serve beside their human counterparts, often in challenging and dangerous environments, forming bonds built on trust, dedication and an extraordinary willingness to protect.

A Distinguished Honour

On 24 February 2025, National Day for War Animals, Aslan and fellow retired Combat Assault Dog Manic were recognised with the inaugural Australian Animal Distinguished Service Award at the Australian War Memorial.

This historic recognition celebrated their outstanding contributions to Australia’s Defence community and highlighted the importance of acknowledging the service and sacrifice of military animals.

Sadly, with the passing of Manic earlier in 2026 and now Aslan, Australia has farewelled two extraordinary canine veterans whose service will never be forgotten.

A Legacy Beyond the Battlefield

Aslan’s dedication did not end when he retired from military service.

Having survived a battle with cancer, he became an advocate for canine health and wellbeing, helping raise awareness of the challenges faced by retired Military Working Dogs.

As a much-loved honorary member of Cronulla RSL, Aslan also helped bring greater public attention to the importance of recognising and supporting these remarkable animals throughout their retirement.

His story reminds us that while a Military Working Dog’s operational duties may come to an end, their need for care, compassion and recognition continues for the rest of their lives.

We Will Remember Him

At AWAMO, our mission is to ensure that the service and sacrifice of animals who have stood alongside our servicemen and women are never forgotten.

Aslan’s life is a powerful reminder of why this mission matters.

He was more than a Military Working Dog. He was a loyal companion, a trusted member of his team, a decorated veteran and a deeply loved member of his family.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Aslan’s family, former handlers, our friends at Cronulla RSL and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Your duty is done, Aslan. Your courage, loyalty and service will never be forgotten.

Rest peacefully, brave boy. Thank you for your service.

Lest We Forget. 💜🐾
