The Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) is proud to commemorate Australian War Animal Day, nationally recognised each year on 24 February, and invites RSL sub-branches, service clubs, schools, councils, veterans’ organisations, and community groups across Australia to take part.
Australian War Animal Day is a moment for our nation to come together and honour the extraordinary contribution animals have made – and continue to make – in areas of conflict. From horses, donkeys, mules and camels, to dogs, pigeons and even dolphins, these loyal companions have served beside our defence personnel with courage, loyalty, and sacrifice.
By hosting a local ceremony, your organisation plays an important part in ensuring their legacy is never forgotten. The suggested dates for hosting a community event are from Friday 20th to Tuesday 24th February 2026.
Every ceremony – large or small – helps raise national awareness of the vital roles animals have played in transport, communication, detection, medical support, protection, and morale. These events foster deeper community connection, education, and remembrance.
AWAMO makes participation simple and effective, providing hosts with a comprehensive support package.
