On Thursday, Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis and Achilleas Demetriades unveiled the Cypriot Mule Corps plaque at the Karafa Bastion of Nicosia’s walled city. This bronze memorial, provided by AWAMO, honours the WW1 Cypriot Mule Corp who served alongside British and Allied forces during World War I and its aftermath (1916–1920).
Professor Atrikkos Varnavas highlighted the corps’ decisive role in supplying troops in Thessaloniki and Istanbul, noting that around 12,000 Cypriot mule and donkey herders contributed during WWI, with thousands more serving in WWII. He also paid tribute to the 177 members who died in action, emphasizing the unity of Greek-speaking Christians and Turkish-speaking Muslims who served together.
Achilleas Demetriades, speaking for the Cyprus Mule Corps initiative, thanked the Nicosia Municipality and Nigel Allsopp for inspiring the memorial, expressing hope that it will become a symbol of remembrance and compassion for both people and animals.
This unveiling marks Phase One of the project. Fundraising efforts are now underway to develop enhanced surrounds and a plinth, ensuring the memorial’s enduring presence and dignity.
