Over the past decade, Nigel has devoted his time to education, memorial projects, veteran support, and global advocacy, making a profound impact on the recognition of animals in service.

Meet Our President – Nigel Allsopp

Nigel Allsopp is a passionate advocate, historian, and speaker dedicated to recognising the service and sacrifices of animals in war, peacekeeping, and conservation. Over the past decade, Nigel has devoted his time to education, memorial projects, veteran support, and global advocacy, making a profound impact on the recognition of animals in service.

Key Achievements and Initiatives:

Educational Publications:

Nigel has authored and published children’s books on war animal stories, including a book specifically for young Indigenous Australians. These books have been distributed freely to schools across Australia and donated to children’s hospitals, Vision Australia, and international blind foundations, with donations exceeding $20,000.

War Animal Rose:

He developed the War Animal Rose, now available worldwide, to promote awareness of service animals. This rose won the 2018 International Heritage Rose Award and is planted around the Commonwealth War Animal Memorial in Toowoomba.

International Ambassador:

Nigel serves as the Australian Ambassador for Blue Cross UK, advocating for recognition of acts of gallantry by service animals in Australia and New Zealand.

Lectures and Public Speaking:

For over ten years, Nigel has delivered lectures and talks to schools, universities, Rotary and Lions clubs, hospitals, museums, and military institutions. His international engagements include prestigious venues such as:

  • Sandhurst Military Academy, UK
  • Australian War Memorial, Canberra
  • National Army Museum, New Zealand
  • Defence Studies Centre, Massey University

Memorial Projects:

Nigel has played a pivotal role in establishing memorials worldwide, including:

  • New Zealand War Animal Memorial, Waiouru (2018)
  • NZ Veterinary Corps Memorial, Massey University
  • Numerous plaques and memorials in Australia commemorating Military Working Dogs, indigenous Light Horsemen, and other service animals

Veteran Support:

Nigel supports both human and animal veterans by:

    • Funding veteran Military Working Dogs, providing veterinary care and financial assistance when government support ends
    • Donating to PTSD programs for military and emergency service personnel

War Animal Day:

Following years of campaigning by Nigel, the Australian Parliament officially recognised War Animal Day, acknowledging the service of animals alongside human soldiers.

 

 


 

Public Speaking & Education

Nigel is a highly sought-after speaker, known for combining compelling storytelling with deep factual expertise. His talks inspire audiences and educate them about the extraordinary roles animals have played throughout history and continue to play today.

In addition to Nigel’s personal engagements, AWAMO staff regularly deliver educational presentations to schools, universities, service clubs, military and law enforcement seminars, and media platforms across Australia and internationally.

The Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) is guided and supported by a dedicated team of patrons, advisors, volunteers, and regional and international representatives. Each team member brings a wealth of experience in military service, animal welfare, education, and community engagement. Together, they ensure AWAMO’s mission – to honour, support, and educate about animals in service – is delivered with integrity, professionalism, and compassion.
