During their time in Ukraine, AWAMO staff visited a zoo that had taken in many animals evacuated from Kyiv Zoo and others located closer to the front lines – animals that would otherwise have faced starvation and freezing conditions after food, power, and gas supplies were cut off. Tragically, many animals had also been deliberately killed by Russian forces.
To help, AWAMO provided funding for large generators to keep the zoo running during crises and donated behavioural enrichment toys to improve the animals’ wellbeing. Behavioural enrichment plays a vital role in daily animal care, encouraging animals to engage with their environment, develop natural behaviours, and even take part voluntarily in aspects of their own care.
These initiatives highlight AWAMO’s ongoing mission to honour service, strengthen communities, and provide practical support where it is needed most. The organisation’s contributions extend beyond therapy and welfare programs to include commemorative projects, such as the 1.5-metre resin sculpture of a Light Horseman donated to the 2/14 QMI Light Horse Regiment.
Another example is Stan the Ram, the 8/9 RAR mascot, painted by AWAMO artist Sharon McLachlan, valued at $5,000 and donated as a lasting tribute to the Battalion’s support. Stan also proudly attends AWAMO memorial openings, symbolising the enduring bond between service, remembrance, and community.
