Archive overview: food and essential supplies, 2022–2023.
A bag of food is a simple thing until there is none left. When our team visited Nowzad’s warehouse in Lviv and learned that its Kyiv branch had run out of cat food, we helped purchase supplies. Nigel watched them being loaded and sent on their way. It was a practical response to an immediate need, made possible by people working together.
Through Australian Animal Aid, we worked with PETstock to help ship essential supplies for animals affected by the war. Our 2022 and 2023 support included food, veterinary supplies and everyday equipment for shelters and animal carers.

Our reports describe a broad mix of practical aid: collars and leads, blankets, coats for dogs and horses, animal carriers, portable kennels, medication and food. Later shipments also included feeding stations and equipment intended to help organisations cope with difficult conditions.
These items met different needs. Coats and blankets could help with winter care; carriers and kennels supported handling and transport; feeding equipment helped volunteers maintain access to food. We also supplied leads, harnesses and other equipment for service dogs. Each contribution formed part of a wider effort rather than a single, one-size-fits-all delivery.
We worked with organisations including UPAW and Nowzad to direct assistance where it was needed. Nigel Allsopp and Peter Kotzur visited Ukraine in 2022 to help oversee emergency relief and build those relationships in person.
Nowzad’s Lviv warehouse acted as a collection and distribution point. Aid was taken onward and collected by local volunteers for distribution in affected communities. Their knowledge and commitment helped bridge the distance between a shipment arriving and food reaching an animal. Our visit showed us how important those local connections were.

The needs our team encountered also included safe shelter, reliable water and ways to keep animals occupied and engaged. Our wider support included behavioural enrichment resources for zoo animals, alongside food and equipment for domestic animals.
We are grateful to the businesses, supporters and partner organisations who contributed goods, expertise and time. From a donor in Australia to a volunteer filling a bowl in Ukraine, each person had a part to play. This archive brings together our food and supply support across 2022–2023, rather than one single shipment.
