Historical support, with a recipient update from May 2026.
A horse cannot simply be carried to safety. Finding feed, protection from the cold and a way to move a large animal places difficult demands on its carers, especially during war. Our Ukraine support has included horses and the organisations working to care for them, alongside our help for dogs, cats and other animals.
Through Australian Animal Aid, we have supported equine assistance as part of our wider work with animal welfare partners. This story looks back at that support and includes a recipient update from May 2026.
Our account of the 2022 Ukraine mission records a donation to Fleet of Angels, a US-based charity helping horses affected by the conflict. The report describes the challenges faced by horse owners and carers, including finding feed and moving animals away from danger.
By supporting an organisation already helping horses in the region, we could contribute to a wider effort. It reflected the approach we have taken throughout our Ukraine work: listen to those closest to the animals and direct help towards practical needs.
Our aid history also includes winter supplies for horses. In a May 2026 update, Liuba from Nowzad identified Sumy Horsesport Club as the recipient of horse rugs and medication connected with our support.
Warmth and care matter after the immediate danger has passed, too. For the people looking after horses, having useful equipment available is part of the continuing responsibility of keeping animals comfortable and cared for.
Our work across Ukraine has depended on local knowledge and ongoing relationships. Supplies and donations are only part of the picture: people must find animals, arrange transport, provide shelter, organise veterinary care and continue feeding them afterwards.
That is why our support has extended across different kinds of assistance, from food and winter equipment to practical first-aid training and help for rescue organisations.
We are grateful to the people who keep doing that work, and to the supporters who help us stand alongside them. Caring for an animal through a crisis takes more than one moment of help. It takes supplies, knowledge, transport and people willing to return the next day.
