Our 2024 Ukraine visit: continuing support for animals and their carers

From our Ukraine support archive: our 2024 return visit and acknowledgements of AWAMO’s work.

AWAMO’s involvement in Ukraine continued beyond our first visit in 2022. Our President, Nigel Allsopp, has confirmed that further visits took place in 2023 and 2024, as we continued supporting animals affected by war and the people caring for them.

Our 2024 visit forms part of that longer commitment through Australian Animal Aid, AWAMO’s animal welfare arm. Alongside Nigel’s account, letters received in October 2024 recognise the practical value of our work with Ukrainian partners.

Recognition from our Ukrainian partners

In a letter dated 7 October 2024, Nowzad Ukraine CEO Liuba Mocharska acknowledged AWAMO’s work alongside her organisation. She described support that helped animals directly while also supporting the morale of the people who cared for them.

Liuba’s letter highlighted AWAMO’s animal first-aid training for members of the public and government agencies, together with emergency procedures to help pet owners and professionals provide immediate assistance until veterinary care could be reached.

Two days later, on 9 October, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, also acknowledged AWAMO’s humanitarian service. His letter recognised our disaster-relief work alongside Nowzad in Lviv and the physical and psychological support this work provided to people affected by the war.

A continuing commitment to practical help

These letters recognise AWAMO’s wider contribution; they are not an itinerary of the 2024 visit. They help explain why continuing this work mattered: helping an animal can also support the person trying to keep that animal safe.

Our earlier September 2023 report documents first-aid teaching, support for animal identification and work with local animal welfare organisations. That history provides the background to our continuing involvement.
