The 10th Mountain Division’s history with mules is deeply rooted in its training and operational needs during World War II. The division’s mules were essential for  transporting heavy equipment and supplies, especially in the challenging mountainous terrain of Italy. The division’s mules were well-trained and equipped for the demanding conditions, making them a vital part of the division’s logistics. The mules were not just for transportation; they were integral to the division’s reconnaissance and support operations, showcasing the division’s adaptability and commitment to its mission.

The 10th Mountain Division’s history with sled dogs is deeply intertwined with its training and operational missions during World War II. The division’s training  included the use of sled dogs to assist in search and rescue operations, particularly in avalanche-prone areas. These dogs were trained to locate trapped or lost soldiers, showcasing their keen instincts and the incredible bond between humans and dogs in survival situations. The presence of sled dogs not only served functional purposes but also offered companionship to soldiers during their rigorous training, boosting morale in the harsh conditions of winter warfare.

AWAMO provided our American friends from the 10th Mountain Division a bronze plaque honouring all the animals that have served that unit.  The bronze plaque will be placed on the wall of the Veterinary unit of the 10th situated at Fort Drum New York.
